Will Wet Drywall Dry On Its Own?

After water damage, many homeowners wonder if they can just let things dry naturally — especially drywall.

The short answer is:
Sometimes — but in most cases, no.

And waiting too long can lead to mold, structural damage, and higher repair costs.

Can Drywall Be Saved After Water Damage?

It depends on:

  • How much water it absorbed

  • How long it’s been wet

  • The type of water (clean vs contaminated)

If the drywall was exposed to clean water and dried within 24–48 hours, it may be salvageable.

But if not, removal is usually required.

When Drywall WILL NOT Dry Properly

Drywall should be removed if:

  • It’s been wet for more than 24–48 hours

  • It feels soft, swollen, or crumbling

  • There is visible staining or discoloration

  • It was exposed to sewer backup (Category 3 water)

  • There’s a musty smell (early mold growth)

Drywall is very porous — once saturated, it holds moisture inside.

Why Letting It “Air Dry” Doesn’t Work

Even if the surface feels dry:

  • Moisture is trapped inside the wall cavity

  • Insulation behind the drywall stays wet

  • Framing can absorb water

  • Mold can begin growing unseen

This is why mold often appears days or weeks later.

What Happens If You Leave Wet Drywall?

Leaving it too long can cause:

  • Mold growth inside walls

  • Odours that are hard to remove

  • Damage to framing and structure

  • More expensive repairs later

What could have been a small dry-out can turn into a full tear-out.

How Professionals Handle Wet Drywall

A proper restoration process includes:

  • Moisture testing to check inside walls

  • Removing baseboards if needed

  • Drilling small holes for airflow OR cutting out affected sections

  • Using air movers and dehumidifiers to fully dry the area

This ensures moisture is completely removed — not just hidden.

Clean Water vs Sewer Backup

This is important:

  • Clean water (burst pipe, supply line): drywall may be saved if caught early

  • Sewer backup: drywall must be removed due to contamination

Sewer water contains bacteria and cannot be safely dried in place.

How Fast Should You Act?

Immediately.

The longer drywall stays wet:

  • The harder it is to save

  • The higher the chance of mold

  • The more damage spreads behind walls
